Motorists just north of downtown Carrboro may again see increased traffic congestion in the coming days.

The Town of Carrboro recently shared a release with community members saying installation of a stormwater pipe at the site of North Greensboro Street and Estes Drive’s eventual roundabout will resume this week. As a new traffic pattern is installed at the intersection of the two popular roads, aging stormwater and sanitary sewer lines underneath it are also being replaced.

The town government encouraged any motorists in the area to be alert to the construction and congestion beginning on Monday. Traffic patterns may change during the installation and additional traffic delays may arise.

Construction on the North Greensboro Street and Estes Drive roundabout has been ongoing since August 2019. The $3.4 million project is funded by the state Department of Transportation and aims to reduce traffic delays and increase safety by providing a smoother flow of traffic upon completion.

The previous update on the roundabout project came in December, when construction shifted from the west side of the roadway to the east side.

Construction on the Estes Drive/ North Greensboro roundabout is expected to be completed by September 2021. More information about the ongoing project can be found on the Town of Carrboro website.
