The Town of Carrboro announced Monday morning that Google Fiber will begin a construction project near downtown.

In a release, the town said Google Fiber plans to start work on Fidelity Street near the existing Google Hut, before moving on to West Main Street. This construction will be followed by more in various areas where the company has town-approved permits.

Carrboro officials say they are monitoring and communicating with Google Fiber crews to provide updates to town residents as needed.

Google Fiber announced it would be coming to the Triangle in 2015, saying the area would be one of the first to use a fiber optic network to create hyper-fast Internet speeds for residents. The Google Hut in Carrboro, which houses servers for the broadband service, was constructed in 2016.

The town’s website says there is no date for when Google Fiber based services will be available in Carrboro.
