After temporarily halting construction for more than a month, Google Fiber is set to begin its work again in Carrboro.

The town government shared a release Monday from the tech company, saying it is restarting its micro-trenching operations around the Winmore neighborhood area. It’s the latest step in the construction of a fiber optic network to deliver high-speed internet to residents.

Google Fiber initially stopped its work in Carrboro on March 20 amid the spread of COVID-19. While the break was initially meant for two weeks, the company cited the health and safety of contractors being the top priority.

On Monday, the company said it would implementing various protocols to continue protecting its workers’ health. Practicing social distancing, using cloth face coverings or disposable masks, having hand washing stations on-site and regularly disinfecting equipment are some of the regulations shared.

Construction on the Google Fiber network has been ongoing since last December.
