Google Fiber announced it will be temporarily stopping its construction in downtown Carrboro amid the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak.

The tech company shared a release on Friday afternoon, saying the work will be paused for at least two weeks. Google Fiber said it will continue to maintenance and repair as needed and that the halt will not risk the loss of any utility services.

In its statement, Google Fiber said it is monitoring the ongoing coronavirus spread throughout all of its cities.

“As always,” said the statement, “the health and safety of our community and our team members remains a top concern. We’ve decided to halt our forward construction in existing neighborhoods for the next two weeks. We’ll continue to install service for new customers as long as it’s safe and we’re able to do so, and we’ll do everything we can to repair and maintain our network for current customers.”

This is not the first stoppage of construction Google Fiber has experienced while working in Carrboro. The tech company previously halted its contractor’s work in late 2019 due to the striking of multiple gas lines over the course of two weeks, which caused brief evacuations. Construction resumed in January with updated plans.
