The Town of Carrboro and Google Fiber announced Tuesday afternoon construction on the high-speed fiber optics network has been temporarily postponed.

The town said in a release Google Fiber voluntarily paused construction after deciding to re-evaluate construction plans in the best interest of the public. The decision came just one day after the contractor for Google Fiber hit its second gas line in less than two weeks, causing a road closure on Old Fayetteville Road and nearby apartments to be evacuated. The town cites “numerous complications” as being the reason for a re-evaluation.

Public safety is the highest priority for the Town,” Carrboro said in the release announcing the halting of construction. “Our goal is to work closely with Google Fiber, OWASA and Dominion Gas to improve coordination and communication on this project that will ultimately be of great benefit for our community.”

Advancement of the project will be delayed until January 1, 2020.
