The Town of Carrboro announced on Friday its annual July 4th celebration downtown has been canceled this year.

The town revealed the news in an update from its Recreation, Parks, & Cultural Resources Department following the beginning of Phase 2 in North Carolina. The cancellation of the in-person festivities held at the Carrboro Town Hall and Weaver Street Market is among many moves in the ongoing response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Carrboro said its department will still offer alternative activities, including the annual Frederick Douglass Essay Reading, virtually. But activities like the parade, the Kids Fun Zone and the pie-eating contest will not be held in-person.

The department’s update also said remaining winter/spring classes and events scheduled through early June have been canceled.

The Town of Chapel Hill has yet to provide any update on whether its July 4th festivities, which typically include a fireworks show, will continue as normal.

In its announcement, the Carrboro Recreation, Parks, & Cultural Resources Department indicated further updates on alternative July 4th celebrations will soon be announced on its web page about the annual celebration and on the town’s social media pages.
