The Town of Carrboro is beginning its face covering distribution plan to town residents to aid compliance with the Orange County mask requirement.

The town shared a release on Friday ahead following the start of the newest change to Orange County’s order, saying its first phase is underway with direct mask distribution happening with some of the most vulnerable communities. Carrboro said low income neighborhoods, African American, Latinx, immigrant and senior living communities will be the first to directly receive masks.

In addition, those in need ahead of direct distribution can visit the Carrboro Police Department and town Fire Department where free face coverings are available for pickup. The police department is offering face coverings on Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the fire department pickups are on Wednesdays through Saturdays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

According to the town’s release, all cloth masks being distributed to the public so far have been donated. The Town of Carrboro said the Facemask Warriors, Sports Endeavors and the U.S. Conference of Mayors donated almost 2,000 face coverings, as well as 4,000 donated masks from the Orange County Emergency Operations Center. Additional face coverings will be ordered to meet the community’s needs following the initial phases of distribution.

Community members looking to donate unused masks can drop off the protective gear at the Carrboro Police Department, where there is a collecting bin outside.
