Carrboro households may need to hold onto their trash for a little longer than normal.

An alert from the town government on Wednesday said equipment failures are causing the Public Works Department to delay its weekly residential household waste collection schedule. The breakdown led to Wednesday’s collection taking longer than expected. As a result, Thursday collection is being moved to Friday, September 18 and Monday, September 21 as needed. Households that receive collection on Friday will receive it on Monday and potentially into Tuesday, September 22.

Additionally, there will be no yard waste collection next week (Monday, September 21) for residents who receive the collection on the 1st and 3rd routes of the month.

Despite the delays, the Town of Carrboro requested residents to keep their carts at the curb until collection is completed.

The equipment failures and delays come as Carrboro Public Works continues to recover from damage caused by July 2025’s Tropical Storm Chantal and its historic levels of flooding — which rose to the department’s main building and totaled much of its fleet. While the town government has maintained its collection service by using other municipality’s vehicles and allocated $3 million in the current fiscal year to buy replacements, Public Works is still limited in its resources as they wait for the trucks to be delivered over the course of 2027.
