As the community celebrates the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday, several local government services will be affected across Orange County.

While most town government offices have been closed to the public due to the COVID-19 pandemic, What can residents of Chapel Hill, Carrboro and Hillsborough expect to see changed? Here is a list of services reported to have an altered schedule by the holiday:

Orange County

The Orange County government told community members who receive curbside recycling service for Thursday, November 26, will receive collection on Saturday, November 28. Collection on Friday will not be affected.

Additionally, the county government said all the manned Waste and Recycling Centers will be closed Thursday, as well as the Orange County Landfill. All will reopen on Friday at 7 a.m.

Some public transportation methods for the county will also be affected. Orange County said fixed routes for the Hillsborough Circulator, the Orange-Chapel Hill Midday Shuttle and the Orange-Alamance Midday shuttle will not run on either Thursday or Friday. Full service will begin again on Monday, November 30.

Chapel Hill

The Town of Chapel Hill has several services that will not be available to residents due to Thanksgiving. While residential trash collection will not be affected, yard waste collection has been postponed for this week and will resume on Monday, November 30. Commercial trash collection will also not run on Thursday or Friday, with collection having happened earlier in the week.

The Chapel Hill Public Library is also closed, taking off for the holiday from Wednesday, November 25, to Friday, November 27.

Chapel Hill Transit will not operate any routes on Thursday, November 26. The system’s Sunday service routes will be used on Friday, with the exception of the U route. The EZ Rider will be closed on Thursday and will operate Friday from 8:15 a.m. to 6:52 p.m.

Additionally, the town government said indoor parks and recreation facilities will be closed Thanksgiving Day. The Homestead Aquatic Center will be open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday for reservation swim only.

Carrboro

Trash collection in the Town of Carrboro happened two days earlier than usual in order to account for no service to residents for Thursday, November 26, and Friday, November 27. The town also told the community now yard waste collection or loose leaf collection is planned for the week.

Hillsborough

Hillsborough residents’ solid waste collection has been combined to cover for no service on Thursday, November 26, and Friday, November 27. Residents who receive Thursday collection will have trash picked up on Wednesday, while Friday routes will receive the service on Monday.

COVID-19 Testing

Free COVID-19 testing offered to Orange County residents will not be held on Thursday, November 26. The only testing sites affected are the weekday testing locations at the Whitted Human Services Center in Hillsborough and the R-7 Parking Lot in Chapel Hill. Free testing in Hillsborough will resume for residents on Friday, November 27, while the R-7 Parking Lot testing will remain closed.
