Local governments traditionally take holidays on Easter weekend and several of the ones in Orange County are this year, leading to some resources and services being temporarily disrupted.

What can residents of Chapel Hill, Carrboro and Hillsborough expect to see changed? Here is a list of services reported to have an altered schedule by the holiday:

Orange County

The Orange County landfill will be closed Friday, April 2, as well as Sunday, April 4. It will operate on limited hours, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., on Saturday, April 3.

Orange County waste and recycling centers will be open on Friday, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday hours will be 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., but the centers will be closed Sunday, April 4.

All locations of the Orange County Public Library will also be closed April 2-4.

Chapel Hill

Most trash collection in Chapel Hill will not be affected on Friday, but commercial trash pickup will be. The town said Friday’s trash will be collected before the end of the week.

Chapel Hill Transit will have its normal Saturday and Sunday service schedules running this weekend, but its Friday service will be altered by the holiday. The transit system will use its Sunday routes and schedules on Friday, with neither the NU or U routes in service. The EZ Ride service will also be available from 8:15 a.m. to 6:52 p.m., according to the town government.

Additionally, the Chapel Hill Community Center, Hargraves Center, Northside Gym, and the Teen Center will be closed. The Homestead Aquatics Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Carrboro

The Town of Carrboro shared a release saying government offices will be closed on Friday in observance of the spring holiday. Additionally, residents who normally receive solid waste collection on Friday will receive service on Monday.

Hillsborough

The Town of Hillsborough will not service solid waste routes on Friday to observe Good Friday. The town government said residents whose garbage is usually picked up on Fridays will receive service on Monday. Hillsborough said weekly brush collection will follow the same schedule as garbage collection.

Additionally, town offices continue to remain closed to the public due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

COVID-19 Testing

The county government’s two regular COVID-19 testing sites will not operate on Friday. The free coronavirus testing sites at the Whitted Building in Hillsborough and the R7 parking lot Chapel Hill will resume their weekday operations on Monday.
