The town and county governments in Orange County will be closed with various services altered as part of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday.
Chapel Hill, Carrboro and Hillsborough all alerted residents to altered schedules, which include closures, different hours and more on Monday, January 17. Here are the aspects of the community’s local governments that will see changes:
Town of Chapel Hill
Due to the holiday, administrative offices, Hargraves Community Center, Teen Center and Community Center Pool will be closed Monday, January 17. The Chapel Hill Community Center, Homestead Aquatic Center and Northside Gymnasium will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Residential trash will not be collected Monday. A make-up day will be held Wednesday, January 19. Commercial trash will also not be collected on January 17. Monday routes will be collected by the end of the week. Yard waste collection and curbside recycling will not be affected.
The Orange County Landfill and Waste & Recycling Centers will be closed for the holiday as well as the Chapel Hill Public Library.
Local transit will also be affected, with Chapel Hill Transit operating on a Sunday schedule (no U route).
Parks, greenways, trails, dog parks, playgrounds, picnic shelters, and outdoor park amenities will remain open.
Town of Carrboro
Town of Carrboro offices will be closed on Monday, January 17 in observance of the holiday.
Monday’s yard waste collection will be picked up on Tuesday, January 18.
Town of Hillsborough
Town of Hillsborough offices will also be closed on Monday for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Garbage collection will be rescheduled from that Monday to Tuesday, January 18.
Orange County Government
In conjunction with local town governments, Orange County administrative offices will be closed Monday, January 17 with numerous services altered for the holiday.
Both county-sponsored COVID testing sites will be open normal hours that day; however, the testing sites will be run by different vendors. County vaccination clinics will be closed.
Solid waste administrative offices and facilities will be closed, but curbside recycling scheduled for Monday will be collected that day.
Orange County Transportation Services will offer limited service, operating the in-county dialysis route only (Carolina Dialysis). Normal county operations will resume Tuesday following the holiday.
