The local governments in Orange County have many events planned for the weekend and holiday of Martin Luther King Jr. Day to recognize the civil rights activist. Here are some of the announcements:

Town of Carrboro

Closings and Delays:

  • Town administrative offices will be closed on Monday, January 20.
  • Yard waste and leaf collection will be delayed until Tuesday, January 21.

 

Events:

  • Saturday, January 18: Youth-Led Special Event from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Century Center. This youth planned event strives to bring the community together to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Speakers, bands, and performers are slated to appear.
  • Sunday, January 19: The 35th Annual University/Community MLK Memorial Banquet & Awards Ceremony at the Friday Center from 5 to 8 p.m.
  • Monday, January 20: Rally organized by the Chapel Hill-Carrboro NAACP at 9 a.m. at the Peace and Justice Plaza, leading into the march to First Baptist Church in Chapel Hill
  • Monday, January 20: Ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park on Hillsborough Road at 3 p.m.

 

Town of Chapel Hill

Closings and Delays:

  • Most administrative and municipal offices will be closed on Monday, January 20.
  • Residential trash pick-up will be delayed until Wednesday, January 22.
  • Chapel Hill Transit will operate on a Saturday schedule (no U, NU and 420 Hillsborough Express lines).

 

Events:

  • Sunday, January 19: The 35th Annual University/Community MLK Memorial Banquet & Awards Ceremony at the Friday Center from 5 to 8 p.m.
  • Monday, January 20: Rally organized by the Chapel Hill-Carrboro NAACP at 9 a.m. at the Peace and Justice Plaza, leading into the march to First Baptist Church
  • Monday, January 20: Community Interfaith Service beginning at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church

 

Town of Hillsborough

Closings and Delays:

  • Town offices will be closed Monday, January 20.
  • Curbside garbage and brush collection will be delayed until Tuesday, January 21.

 

Events:

  • Monday, January 20: Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative March beginning at 9 a.m. on Churton Street near the Historic Orange County Courthouse.

 

Orange County Government

Closings and Delays:

  • County administrative offices, solid waste facilities and Orange County Animal Services will be closed Monday, January 20.

Events:

  • Friday, January 17: County Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the Passmore Center from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. The event features guest speaker Danita Mason-Hogans, who is a native of Chapel Hill and comes from seven generations of “movement people.” She has also been an education activist for over 30 years and is employed with the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University where she serves as Program Manager for the Critical Oral Histories program.
