To honor winter holidays and celebrate the beginning of 2021, the town governments of Orange County will be giving employees time off.

While most town government offices have already been closed to the public due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most will be closed in the upcoming days, and other regular services will see interruptions. What can residents of Chapel Hill, Carrboro and Hillsborough expect to see changed? Here is a list of services reported to have an altered schedule by the holidays:

Orange County

For Thursday, December 24, the Orange County Landfill and Waste and Recycling Centers will be open from 7 a.m. until 12 p.m. Curbside recycling will be collected as usual.

Both solid waste centers will be closed on Friday, December 25 and on Friday, January 1. Curbside recycling for residents typically serviced on Friday will occur on Saturday, December 27.

Collection for curbside recycling on Friday, January 1, will also be completed the following Saturday.

Chapel Hill

The Town of Chapel Hill has several services that will not be available to residents. While residential trash collection will not be affected, commercial trash will not be collected on December 24 or December 25 and no yard waste collection will happen until December 27. Commercial trash and yard waste will also not be collected on January 1 and instead will be collected earlier in the week.

Chapel Hill Transit will operate Sunday Service routes without the NU or U routes on December 24 and December 31 with limited EZ Rider services. The transit system will be non-operational on December 25 and January 1. The NU route will take an extended period off as well, beginning operation again on January 15.

The Chapel Hill Public Library will be closed from December 23 through December 27. It will also be closed on January 1.

While many outdoor Parks and Recreation services will be accessible, the Homestead Aquatics Center and the Community Center Pool will both be closed from December 24 and December 25.

Carrboro

Trash collection by the Town of Carrboro has run on an altered schedule this week, with those whose trash would be collected on Wednesday and Thursday seeing their trash collected Monday, December 21 and Tuesday, December 22. Routes on December 25 will be collected three days later on December 28. Yard waste and loose leaf collection will not resume until after December 25.

The following week, trash pickup for residences serviced on Thursday will see their trash collected on Wednesday, December 30. This is because residences who see service on Friday will see their trash collected on Thursday instead.

Hillsborough

Hillsborough residents’ whose garbage is normally picked up on Thursdays will receive service on December 23. Those whose garbage is typically collected on Fridays will receive service on December 28. According to the town, brush collection will follow the same schedule.

COVID-19 Testing

Free COVID-19 testing offered to Orange County residents will not be held on December 24, or December 25. Testing at the Chapel Hill location off Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard on December 26, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The St. Thomas More Catholic Church will also host free testing through the county that Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Testing locations will also be closed Friday, January 1.
