The Orange County Social Services Department has been sponsoring and leading various food distribution events through the county following the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. On Thursday, one of those events will be coming to the Carrboro community.
The Town of Carrboro shared a release on Monday notifying its residents of the Community Food Distribution event. Scheduled for 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 25, the event will be held at Carrboro High School on Rock Haven Road.
The town said in its release anyone who is in need is welcome to come, with food being distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. The county’s Community Food Distribution events are free of charge and have no eligibility requirements.
Due to COVID-19, organizers have changed the way they hold the events. In order to ensure a contactless pick-up of food, organizers request those in need show up on a drive-thru basis. Organizers will then place the food boxes into the trunks of each individual’s vehicle.
In addition to the food, the town and county Social Service Department are also distributing free masks to anyone who needs them. The goal is to protect public health and to aid compliance with Orange County’s face covering requirement.
The Town of Chapel Hill’s weekly food distribution event is still slated for Wednesday at the lower parking lot of the Chapel Hill Public Library.
