After a series of vehicle break-ins on campus, the UNC Police Department issued a warning to the university’s community Tuesday about securing their valuables and locking their cars.

The university department issued an Alert Carolina message on Tuesday morning to inform students, faculty and staff about a string of incidents at the Dogwood Parking Deck off Manning Drive. Since Saturday, April 22, police said officers responded to five breaking and entering incidents and one attempted breaking and entering around vehicles in the deck.

While primarily used to serve UNC Hospitals, Dogwood Parking Deck does also offer parking for some accessing the UNC School of Dentistry and other medical facilities in the area. Students and UNC employees, however, are only allowed to park in the deck for appointments. While Dogwood occasionally opens for Carolina Athletics gameday parking, there was only one Tar Heel team playing in Chapel Hill over the weekend (baseball).

UNC Police said its department is investigating the incidents, but “there is no suspect description at this time.” The Alert Carolina did, however, encourage campus visitors to be familiar with their surroundings, to lock their vehicles, and try to take any valuable items with them when they leave.

The university’s police department also encouraged anyone who spots “suspicious conditions” of vehicles to call campus police by dialing 911 for emergency assistance. Non-emergency calls can be made to 919-962-8100 and UNC Police officers can be found in person at the Public Safety Building at 285 Manning Drive.
