The UNC Police Department is urging students and campus community members to keep an eye on their belongings after reports of thefts in several academic halls.
An Alert Carolina message shared on Monday afternoon said police are investigating multiple larcenies and attempted larcenies in four buildings: Fordham Hall, Wilson Hall, Coker Hall, and the Genome Science Building. All four buildings, which are off South Road and Bell Tower Drive, are predominantly used for classes, research and faculty offices of the Biology Department.
Police said the suspect in the thefts has been described as looking through unattended backpacks and items in the buildings. Investigators describe the person as a male with dark hair and some facial hair, standing approximately 5-foot-3 and wearing a green backpack.
The Alert Carolina encouraged anyone among the campus community with knowledge or details of the thefts to call UNC Police at 919-962-8100. Those who wish to remain anonymous can also use the Chapel Hill-Carrboro-UNC Crime Stoppers hotline at 919-942-7515. In the moment, suspicious individuals and activity seen by others can also be reported to housing staff or UNC Police if nearby.
Additionally, police shared tips for people around the UNC campus to keep in mind as the thefts are being investigated. Monday’s release suggested that those with offices lock their doors whenever leaving, as well as purchasing a small personal safe or footlocker. Police also suggested not holding doors open to allow others inside campus buildings unless recognizing the person lives, works or has class. Finally, campus community members are encouraged to note the condition of your room, office, study space or belongings when you leave and return to an area — making sure to note any chances and call 911 if there’s concern that something has been changed or tampered with.
