UPDATE: The UNC Police Department said it has arrested and charged a suspect in the shooting off Mason Farm Road earlier in April.
An Alert Carolina shared with the campus community on Tuesday that authorities had located and apprehended the suspect earlier in the day. 28-year-old Ronnell Canion was arrested Durham County before being transferred to the Orange County Detention Center. He faces felony charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and discharging a weapon into an occupied dwelling in connection to the non-fatal shooting. Canion’s bond is set at $450,000.
A spokesperson for UNC Police said the university has no update on the status of the victim as of Tuesday.
Below is the original story, which was published the day of the incident.
A ‘targeted shooting’ on UNC property in Chapel Hill left one person injured, according to an Alert Carolina message.
The university issued the emergency alert around 4:30 p.m. Sunday, saying investigators are searching for a suspect after a victim suffered a gunshot wound along Mason Farm Road. Police arrived after a report of a shooting at a residence in the 1500 block around 2 p.m., which the alert clarified is “owned by the university and leased by a real estate company.”
The Alert Carolina email sent to campus community members said police believe there is not an ongoing threat to the public’s safety and the victim is unaffiliated with the university. The message said the suspect has been identified — although they were not named in the email and UNC did not indicate whether the suspect is affiliated with the school. They are described as a 28-year-old Black male, who is 6-foot, weighs 180 pounds and wearing a white t-shirt, black pants and black shoes.
The street, which is one of the southern-most part of UNC campus, is between Fordham Boulevard/U.S. 15-501 and the part of university property that includes the Kenan-Flagler Business School, the Baity Hill living community, and the Dean Smith Center. According to the Alert Carolina, Mason Farm Road is closed between Fordham Boulevard and the nearby Oteys Road as the police investigation continues Sunday afternoon.
