UPDATE: Authorities have identified and charged the suspect in Sunday night’s assault on campus, but have not yet arrested them.

The UNC Police Department said in an informational Alert Carolina alert on Monday afternoon that the suspect, who was not named in the message, is charged with misdemeanor assault. A spokesperson for the department confirmed to Chapelboro that an arrest has not been made as of Monday at 5 p.m.

The UNC Police Department is investigating a reported assault on campus at the intersection of Raleigh Street and South Road Sunday night.

An Alert Carolina shared by the university said UNC Police received a report through its CrimeStoppers service at 6:30 p.m. about the incident. A male subject reportedly assaulted a female student at the intersection, which is near Fetzer Gym and Winston Residence Hall, and chased her toward the Frank Porter Graham Student Union around 6 p.m. on Sunday.

The message to the campus community, which was shared just after 9:30 p.m., said the suspect had not yet been apprehended. The man is described as in his 20s or 30s with dark hair and a dark beard. Police said he’s described as wearing dark pants and a yellow puffer jacket, with the Alert Carolina saying he was last seen walking east down South Road from the student union toward Hooker Fields. The message did not indicate whether the suspect has any ties to the UNC nor knew the victim.

UNC Police said no further information is available as of the Alert Carolina. An earlier version of the alert said the incident happened at the intersection of Raleigh Road and South Road before being updated to Raleigh Street.

Any campus community member with information about Sunday’s assault is encouraged to contact UNC Police, according to investigators. People can call 911 or the UNC Police Department directly at 919-962-8100. Officers are also available in-person at the Public Safety Building off Manning Drive. People can also submit information anonymously using the CrimeStoppers hotline (919-942-7515) and website.
