The UNC Police Department shared details of an assault on a student Wednesday night in the south campus community.

An informational Alert Carolina message was shared shortly before midnight, saying the student reported to UNC Police that an unknown man assaulted them near Craige Residence Hall along Skipper Bowles Drive. Around 8:55 p.m., the suspect moved to “pull the student into the wooded area behind the residence hall and then tried to push the student down.” Police said the student reported fighting off the man, leaving the area and calling campus police.

According to the arrest report from the incident, 18-year-old Jordan Steele faces one charge of kidnapping and another of assault by an unknown person. UNC Police officers arrested him near Hinton-James Residence Hall shortly after. Steele, who is a Pittsboro resident and is unaffiliated with the university, was given a $25,000 bond by the county magistrate’s office. He made his first appearance in Orange County District Court on Thursday.

The Alert Carolina message reminded students that the UNC Police Department is available to call at 911 during emergencies and 919-962-8100 for non-emergency assistance. Campus police officers can also be found in person at the Public Safety Building, which is at 285 Manning Drive across from Morrison Residence Hall.
