Following a shooting at a private party in a Carrboro business early Sunday morning, police charged one juvenile with assault with a deadly weapon and unlawful firearm possession.

The Carrboro Police Department shared a release with the public on Monday detailing the incident. According to authorities, police officers responded to a shooting inside the Salon Monterrey event space in Carrboro Plaza shortly after 1:30 a.m. The department’s investigation later revealed two male subjects at a private party got into a verbal argument that escalated into a physical fight. One of the subjects, who is younger than 18 years old, then pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots. The other subject in the fight was struck once in the chest.

Carrboro Police said other people at the party then subdued the shooting suspect until officers arrived. The victim was transported to the UNC Hospital, with police saying he was treated for a single gunshot wound to the chest. According to Monday’s release, the victim is now in stable condition.

Because the shooting suspect is under 18 years old, no identifying information was released by police. Carrboro Police Department did, however, file juvenile petitions on charges of Assault with a Deadly Weapon Inflicting Serious Injury, Possession of a Firearm by a Minor, Possession of a Firearm in Establishment with Alcohol, and Possession of a Firearm with Altered Serial Number. The suspect was held in Dillon Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Butner, N.C., after being taken by officials with the Department of Public Safety.

Carrboro Police said Tuesday authorities believe Sunday’s shooting to be an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
