This week’s Hometown Hero, presented by Hendrick Southpoint, is Joal Broun — recent appointee to Orange and Chatham Counties’ district court judge position.

Governor Roy Cooper appointed Broun, who currently works for the North Carolina Department of the Secretary of State, to fill recently-retired Judge Beverly Scarlett’s seat in District 15B.

Broun is a graduate of the Wake Forest University School of Law, previously served on the Carrboro Board of Alderman, now known as the Carrboro Town Council, and currently both works as Director of the Lobbying Compliance Division for the Secretary of State department and has on the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education, a position she will step down from to accept her new position.

“I am the sum of what everyone has sown into me,” said Broun. “I want to thank everybody for their support. Education is important, it makes a qualitative difference in somebody’s life if we educate people to the fullest of their abilities. So I’m going to ask you to continue to push to that — and sometimes that’s going to be difficult, because people are going to push back. But you must persevere, because we don’t want people to be before me in criminal court. What we do want is people who are adopting children, people who are making differences in people’s lives.”
