The State Bureau of Investigations has been called in to investigate a fatal shooting involving deputies with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities say deputies responded to a request for assistance from the Mebane Police Department around 11 o’clock Saturday night. Officials say an individual had allegedly broken into a Mebane home and assaulted two occupants.

The suspect was “reported to have been armed with a handgun at the time of the alleged home invasion and assault,” according to a release from the sheriff’s office.

The suspect “had fired the handgun during the home invasion,” according to authorities, and was considered “armed and dangerous.”

Deputies were given the name and address of the suspect along with the registration number of the vehicle he was allegedly operating.

Authorities say deputies responded to the Efland address associated with the suspect.

After knocking on the door, “a male subject abruptly exited holding a handgun and raised the handgun pointing it at deputies,” according to officials.

Deputies then fatally shot the subject, who authorities say was identified as “the same person Mebane Police was attempting to locate and arrest in reference to the reported home invasion and assault.”

Sheriff Charles Blackwood then responded to the scene and notified District Attorney James Woodall, according to a release. The deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in these situations.

The release from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office began by offering “our thoughts and prayers are with the decedent’s family and friends. The loss of human life under circumstances such as this is tragic and leaves us all asking why.”

The name of the individual shot or the deputies involved have not immediately released.
