Town officials in Hillsborough announced plans last week to replace a rock-laden stormwater drainage swale at Cates Creek Park with a plant-lined rain garden.
According to the announcement, the purpose of the rain garden is to “act as a bioretention area by allowing collected [stormwater] runoff to soak into the ground.”
The park will remain closed from Monday, February 20 to Friday, February 24 while crews lay a drainage pipe and top it with the necessary filtering layers of gravel and soil.
The announcement also states that pollinator-friendly plants will be added as spring approaches to reinforce the town’s affiliation with Bee City USA, an Asheville-based non-profit group.
