Construction of a skate spot in Hillsborough’s Cates Creek Park is set to begin on May 22. Initial clearing and grading at the site began on May 9. The Town of Hillsborough estimates the skate spot’s construction will last three to four months. Cates Creek Park is a 17-acre park located at 1445 Cates Creek Parkway, and includes a playground, soccer fields and a community dog park in addition to the upcoming skate spot.

Orange County commissioner Matt Hughes shared his anticipation for the skate spot, calling it a project “20+ years in the making.”

The town has contracted Philadelphia-based company 5th Pocket Skateparks to design and construct the facility. 5th Pocket met with more than 50 local skaters in early 2023 to survey designs for the park. The Hillsborough Parks and Recreation Board has recommended the town to include more skate spots – which are generally smaller than full-sized skate parks – around the town in its long-term park plans.

The town is asking residents to stay away from the construction zone, both for the safety of the workers and to avoid any delays. Inquiries can be directed to Stephanie Trueblood, Public Space and Sustainability Manager for the town, at 919-296-9600 or via email here.
