As the Town of Hillsborough plans to create a new skating spot near town, the local government is putting out an all-call for skateboarders who are interested in sharing their input.
The town announced plans to hold a design session with a group contracted to help build a “skate spot” on Saturday, January 7 and encouraged skaters of all ages to attend. The meeting is set for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Town Hall Annex at 105 East Corbin Street.
A skate spot, which is a skateboarding area smaller than a full skate park, is in the plans for Cates Creek Park — a 17-acre community park at 1445 Cates Creek Parkway. While the park already has a playground, soccer fields, picnic tables and restroom facilities, Hillsborough is exploring the possibility of additional amenities. A skate spot is a high priority, according to the town’s master plan for Cates Creek Park, while additional picnic areas, a trail system and a community dog park are among the others being pursued by town staff.

Hillsborough is partnering with a Philadelphia-based skatepark construction group called 5th Pocket Skateparks to design and build the new skating area. The town said the company suggested having a design meeting open to public in order hear directly from local skaters and community members about which features and amenities to include in the skate spot.
The Cates Creek Park skate spot may be just the first of future skateboarding areas around town. The Hillsborough Parks and Recreation Board has recommended skate spots be included in long-term park planning efforts. The board’s master plan for Cates Creek Park, which was updated in April, can be found here.
