A 30-year-old man has been arrested for assaulting his father with a handgun in Orange County.

Deputies with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported shooting on Dewey Road in Efland shortly after 10 o’clock Thursday night, according to a release.

Authorities say deputies found the 66-year-old victim, James Jones, who had allegedly been assaulted with a handgun by his 30-year-old son Justin Jones.

Witnesses told law enforcement the suspect fled the residence on foot and was still in possession of the firearm. Jones was able to escape an “extensive search” on Thursday night before being apprehended in the Durham City limits on Friday afternoon.

Warrants were obtained charging Jones with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury.

Jones is being held on a $30,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Orange County court on Monday.
