There’s a Hansbrough in town.

No, not that one.

Greg Hansbrough, the eldest of the three Hansbrough brothers, is touring Triangle bookstores to advertise his new autobiography, “Enduring Strength: The Story of the Other Hansbrough Brother.”

Greg, who is a triathlete and ultra-marathon runner, was diagnosed with a brain tumor when he was seven years old.

“The doctors said I’d never be able to walk normally again. Running would be a dream goal for me,” Greg said. “Riding a bike would be impossible.”

In spite of that, Greg went on to become the captain of his cross-country team in high school.

“Once I’d gotten out of the hospital, the brain tumor stuff was kind of in my rearview mirror,” Greg said. “I was just trying to accomplish tasks. And things didn’t work the way they’d worked before I had surgery, but I still had my goals.”

Eventually, one of those goals included writing a book about his experiences. It was something he hadn’t thought about until he began writing for therapeutic purposes.

“It started nine years ago,” Greg said. “I sat down and started writing as a therapeutic exercise, to see where I’d been to where I am now. And once I got into it, I started thinking, ‘This could help motivate some people.’”

Greg said he’s already heard from people who are inspired by his words.

“(At) my book event last week at Flyleaf Bookstore in Chapel Hill, a lady came in walking with a cane,” Greg said. “She had a car accident, and she is now learning how to walk again after having a traumatic brain injury. And she found inspiration in my book. I wanted to say, ‘You’re impressed with me? I’m inspired by you.’”

Greg’s next book event will be Saturday, February 11, from 11 AM-3 PM at Morgan Imports in Durham.
