An early morning car crash along Interstate 85 South killed a Hillsborough woman, according to the Durham Police Department.
A release from police said its Traffic and Crash Team is investigating the fatal crash that happened near the I-85 and U.S. 15-501 exchange at approximately 1:52 a.m. According to the investigation, Claudia Azucena Campos Lopez — a 39-year-old Hillsborough resident — was traveling southbound on the interstate in a 2008 Nissan Pathfinder. Near mile marker 172, Lopez ran the vehicle off the right side of the roadway, where it hit a 2013 Kia Optima parked along the shoulder of the highway. Police said the Optima was unoccupied.
Sunday’s release said while EMS responded to the scene, Lopez was pronounced dead upon their arrival. The investigation is ongoing, but speed appears to be a factor in the crash, according to police.
The Durham Police Department is asking anyone who may have additional information about the crash to contact Investigator A. Roberts by calling 919-560-4935 and dialing extension 29410.
