A crash along Interstate 85 near the Orange County line early Sunday morning led to the death of a Durham man and charges for a Hillsborough resident, according to police.

The Durham Police Department shared a release on Sunday saying its traffic and crash responders were called to a crash around 5 a.m. in the southbound lanes of I-85. The police investigation found Kevin Bautista-Felicitos of Durham was the passenger of 2018 Jeep Wrangler driven by Eduaurdo Garcia of Hillsborough. Garcia lost control of the vehicle and ran off the road to the right before over-correcting back onto the interstate. Police said that led the Jeep to “overturn and flip several times.”

Sunday’s release said Bautista-Felicitos was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. He was 21 years old. Garcia, who is 23, was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Durham Police charged Garcia with misdemeanor death, as well as careless and reckless driving, but said in its release that the crash remains under investigation. The department asked anyone who may have information about the fatal incident to call Investigator H. Henry at 919-560-4935 extension 29449.

Police said in the release southbound I-85 was closed for around four hours near the Orange-Durham county line on Sunday as a result of the crash.
