Overnight Repairs Scheduled for N.C. 86 Bridge in Hillsborough

Contractors from the North Carolina Department of Transportation are planning for overnight closures along a section of Interstate 85 in Hillsborough to repair the North Carolina Highway 86 bridge. The southbound lanes of the interstate are set to close at Exit 165 from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. starting on Saturday, June 17. According to the NCDOT, the closures are expected to last “a couple of weeks.”

N.C. 86 will be also be closed in both directions at the I-85 interchange for the duration of the work. A signed detour will be in place on the scene to direct motorists around the work.

The bridge was damaged in May when a tractor trailer struck a steel support beneath the bridge. The northbound lane of N.C. 86 along the bridge has been closed since the beginning of June. The bridge was previously damaged in September 2022 when a tractor trailer flipped, struck the overpass and caught fire.
