The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office arrested an Orange County man following an incident of kidnapping and assault with a deadly weapon.

A release from the sheriff’s office on Friday said it arrested Cordell Baldwin, 30, on Thursday. The Mebane resident is facing charges of second degree kidnapping, assault by pointing a gun, possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of a stolen firearm and three counts of assault with a deadly weapon.

According to the sheriff’s office, Baldwin is alleged to have forced a victim driving a vehicle to give him a ride after Baldwin engaged in an argument with several other people. A spokesperson for the office said the incident began near the Governor’s Club. Several concerned citizens trailed the vehicle, giving 911 updates on the vehicle’s position, said the release.

The vehicle was later stopped by Chatham County deputies, who took Baldwin into custody and charged him.

Baldwin is being held on a $40,000 secure bond at the Chatham County Detention Center. The sheriff’s office release said he has a court date of June 22 in Pittsboro.
