A Durham man facing dozens of felony charges will see more from Orange County after investigators from the sheriff’s office identified him as a suspect in a string of November break-ins to Hillsborough resident’s homes and vehicles.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office posted an update on Wednesday saying 24-year-old Keshaun Christopher Byrd, who is currently jailed in Durham County, accompanied the pair of people charged in December for taking items vehicles and sheds along Red Hill Lane and Seven Springs Road during the early morning hours of Nov. 21 and Nov. 22. Sergeant K. Goodwin, the lead Orange County investigator on the crimes, began developing a case for Byrd as a suspect after collaborating with the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office — who was holding 18-year-old Jostin Josue Ramirez-Duarte for his own crimes, and seeking Byrd for a series of vehicle thefts and break-ins around northeast Chatham in August. Goodwin determined that Byrd was with Jostin Josue Ramirez-Duarte, 18, and a 17-year-old person at the time of the November crimes.
A Durham resident, Byrd was arrested and arrived to the Durham County Detention Center on Dec. 16. after being wanted for more than 50 other burglary charges from Durham and Wake counties, which were all similar breaking-and-entering cases to those in Orange and Chatham counties. Orange County authorities served Byrd his felony warrants for 22 counts of breaking and entering a motor vehicle; larceny of a motor vehicle, larceny of a firearm, first-degree burglary to a residence, attempted first-degree residential burglary and three counts of breaking and entering to outbuildings. He is currently held under a $847,000 bond as he awaits trial on the charges from multiple law enforcement agencies.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office outlined its investigation into the break-ins off U.S. Highway 70 in December when it charged Ramirez-Duarte and a 17-year-old, whose identity is not being publicly shared by law enforcement based on state laws for charging a juvenile. Investigators determined the suspects, which now include Byrd, went to homes and entered unlocked vehicles, stealing a firearm, $600 cash, purses, keys, tools, garage door openers and one vehicle later found crashed in Durham on Nov. 21. Evidence from the wrecked car and footage from home security systems in the Red Hill Lane and Seven Springs Road helped the sheriff’s office piece together the suspects’ movements and later the identities of Ramirez-Duarte and the 17-year-old.
Byrd’s court hearing for a first appearance on the charges in Orange County is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 8.
