A man suspected of robbing Subway restaurants in Carrboro and Chatham County has been arrested.

A release from the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office said that 36-year-old Thomas Laney, of Jack Bennett Road just north of Fearrington, was taken into custody last Monday.

Laney was accused of assaulting an employee at the Subway on Governor’s Drive in Governor’s Village before “fleeing the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash,” according to a release from the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office.

Law enforcement officials said an investigation connected Laney to other instances, including a reported attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon at a Subway restaurant on Jones Ferry Road in Carrboro.

Carrboro Police records show the suspect demanded money while wielding a blunt object.

Laney was charged by the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office with two counts of common law robbery, attempted robbery with a firearm or dangerous weapon, assault on a female and communicating threats and held under a $280,000 secured bond. He was subsequently charged with failure to comply with pretrial release, officials said, adding a $10,000 secured bond.

He is scheduled to appear in Chatham County District Court in Pittsboro on the robbery charges in early January.
