A Carrboro man drowned in Jordan Lake on Tuesday evening, according to the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office.

A release from the sheriff’s office on Wednesday said 52-year-old Eduardo Martinez was swimming in the lake near the intersection of Martha’s Chapel Road and Farrington Road when his family observed him struggling in the water. Unable to help him, according to investigators, they called the sheriff’s office at 8:47 p.m. and emergency services drove to the area.

The sheriff’s office said despite “the immediate response,” Martinez drowned and his body was recovered later on Tuesday night.

“Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Eduardo Martinez during this very difficult time,” said Chatham County Sheriff Mike Roberson. “Losing a loved one in such a sudden and tragic manner is devastating, and we are here to support the family in any way we can.”

Tuesday’s incident marks the third drowning at Jordan Lake this summer, as a 25-year-old from Charlotte drowned on June 15 and a 16-year-old from Winston-Salem drowned over Memorial Day weekend.

The incident led to the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office issuing a series of safety tips for people visiting Jordan Lake or any other bodies of water — especially around a busy time like the Fourth of July holiday.

“As we approach the busy holiday weekend, we urge everyone to prioritize safety while enjoying the natural resources our county has to offer,” said Roberson. “Swimming in designated areas of Jordan Lake and following safety guidelines can prevent such heartbreaking incidents. Please be mindful of the dangers and take the necessary precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable time for all.”

The sheriff’s office recommends any visitors swimming or going out on Jordan Lake to wear a life jacket, swim only in designated areas, supervise children closely and be aware of water conditions.

Wednesday’s release said in addition to the sheriff’s office, first responders included North Chatham Fire Department, FirstHealth Emergency Medical Services, Chatham County Emergency Management, and the Medical Examiner assisted in the attempted rescue and recovery of Martinez. The Carrboro resident’s family is in touch with the sheriff’s office’s victim services unit to receive support and assistance in the wake of his death.
