The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office says a 16-year-old drowned at Jordan Lake on Sunday afternoon. Bryan Guzman of Winston-Salem was visiting the lake with his brother and a friend.

The sheriff’s office says Guzman drowned at around 3:30 p.m. near Ebenezer Picnic Area A, which is located at 452 Ebenezer Road in New Hill. Guzman’s brother called 911 to report that Guzman was in distress while swimming in a nearby cove, which was not a designated swimming area.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the Guzman family during this very difficult time,” said Chatham County sheriff Mike Roberson. “Our hearts go out to them as they mourn the loss of their son and brother.”

The sheriff’s office urges everyone to follow water safety rules, particularly during holiday weekends. All visitors to Jordan Lake are recommended to wear a life jacket, swim only in designated areas, supervise children closely and to be aware of water conditions.

The sheriff’s office says it will continue to patrol Jordan Lake throughout the remainder of the Memorial Day holiday.
