The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office, along with the state medical examiner, are investigating a drowning at the Jordan Lake Wildlife Area from overnight Saturday.
A release from the sheriff’s office Sunday morning said 25-year-old Pradip Kumar Bhujel of Charlotte was found after a search around Jordan Lake near the address of 6771 NC 751. Emergency responders first arrived around 11:43 p.m. after a call of a possible drowning.
Upon arrival, rescue teams learned Bhujel was attending a fishing outing with friends, and he was last seen wading into the water before disappearing from view.
The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office said search efforts for Bhujel focused on the area where he was last seen, which is ultimately where his body was found. Sunday’s release said he was pronounced dead at the scene.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Pradip Kumar Bhujel,” said Chatham County Sheriff Mike Roberson. “Our team is thoroughly investigating the incident to understand the circumstances that led to this tragic event.”
The sheriff’s office said along with its deputies, first responders from Chatham County Emergency Management, North Chatham Volunteer Fire Department, FirstHealth EMS, and the state Medical Examiner’s Office assisted in the overnight search.
Bhujel’s death marks the second fatal drowning around Jordan Lake this summer, as a 16-year-old from Winston-Salem drowned over Memorial Day weekend while swimming in a cove. All visitors to Jordan Lake are recommended to wear a life jacket, swim only in designated areas, supervise children closely and to be aware of water conditions.
No other information is publicly available about Bhujel’s death as of Sunday morning, according to investigators.
