The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office has charged a woman in connection to dog bite incidents involving her four pit bulls.

According to the sheriff’s office, deputies responded to a distress call regarding an animal attack at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Monday, May 20. A mother and her 12-year-old son were walking in the Firefly Overlook subdivision near Jordan Lake when they were attacked by four pit bulls, with the mother sustaining injuries to her legs and left hand and the son sustaining multiple bite wounds on his leg. Both were transported to WakeMed Hospital for treatment.

The sheriff’s office said deputies used all less-than-lethal measures to try and capture the dogs. Three were subdued and taken to the Chatham Sheriff’s Animal Resource Center in Pittsboro for a mandatory 10-day rabies observation. The fourth dog eluded capture until it was shot and killed. Its remains will be tested for rabies.

Investigators with the sheriff’s office say they also discovered the same pack of pit bulls had attacked a 66-year-old man earlier that same day. The man reportedly sustained several bite wounds but was able to drive himself to an urgent care facility for treatment.

Brittney Patrice Fountain, 31, of Hope Mills, N.C., faces 12 charges, including four counts of animal cruelty, four counts of animal abandonment and one count of violation of rabies vaccination for a dog.
