Chapel Hill Police have arrested a suspect wanted in connection with “multiple cases” of breaking and entering. Authorities also recovered a stolen handgun during the arrest of 21-year-old Anthony Justin Peterson, of Hillsborough.

“I’m extremely proud of the work of our officers in this case,” Chapel Hill Police Chief and executive director for Community Safety Chris Blue said in a release. “Not only were multiple cases closed where people were victimized; a stolen firearm was taken out of the hands of a convicted criminal.”

Law enforcement officials said Peterson was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of a stolen firearm and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

An officer recognized Peterson on Wednesday, May 30, off of a description of a suspect wanted on multiple warrants, according to police. The officer then ran the license plate of the vehicle Peterson was allegedly driving, which came back as stolen. A Chapel Hill Police K9 was also called to the scene and alerted authorities to narcotics in the vehicle.

Peterson was also wanted by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office for two counts of breaking and entering, larceny, one count of breaking and entering a vehicle and one count of larceny of a motor vehicle. He was also wanted on a warrant by the State of North Carolina for parole violation.

“We greatly appreciate the continued support of our municipal partners,” said Orange County Sheriff Charles Blackwood in a release. “We are all working together to constantly improve community safety, and we couldn’t do it without being able to lend a helping hand.”

Peterson was scheduled to make his first appearance in Orange County court on Friday afternoon. He was initially held under a $50,000 secured bond.
