The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office recently arrested a man accused of exposing himself in view of neighbors and taking indecent liberties with a child.

In a release on Monday morning, the sheriff’s office said 41-year-old Marcellious Sharta Phillips was arrested by deputies on March 8 on several charges. According to a timeline shared by the local authorities, Chatham County deputies initially received reports of a disturbance on February 25 involving Phillips — a registered sex offender — being in possession of a shotgun. When investigators arrived at his address at 140 Dalton Drive in Chapel Hill, he had left the scene. The sheriff’s office said a search was later conducted at the home and deputies seized three firearms — one of which was reported stolen in 2005.

On March 2, the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a man “indecently exposing himself in view of neighbors.” Investigators said the neighbors alleged the man, Phillips, had done the same thing within their view “at least 10 times over the last several months.”

Phillips’ charges include: possession of firearm by a felon, indecent liberties with a child, indecent exposure to a victim over 18 years-old and indecent exposure to a victim under 16 years old.

The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office said Phillips was issued an $80,000 secured bond for the indecent exposure charges, but no bond on his firearm possession and indecent liberties charges. He is scheduled to appear in Chatham County District Court on Monday, March 27.
