A personal dispute that escalated to gunfire and a vehicle collision also led to a Chapel Hill resident facing attempted murder charges.
The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office shared a release on Friday detailing its response to reports of a shooting along U.S. 15-501 near Andrews Store Road around 9:45 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 9. 26-year-old Jonathan Guillermo Ruiz-Perez was arrested and charged with three felony counts of attempted murder and one felony count of shooting into an occupied vehicle.
According to investigators, the victim in the case reported to deputies that another motorist — who he identified as Ruiz-Perez, because the pair know each other — fired multiple gunshots at his vehicle during the encounter. To get away, the victim then “rammed the suspect’s vehicle before both individuals drove away from the scene in different directions,” said the sheriff’s office.
While the victim was not injured from the gunshots, Chatham County sheriff’s deputies found bullet holes in his vehicle. With the identification of the suspect, the investigators went to Ruiz-Perez’s residence off Cedar Terrace Road in the Chapel Hill part of Chatham County and executed their search warrant.
Because the shooting stemmed from the dispute between Ruiz-Perez and the victim, the sheriff’s office said on Friday it does not believe the community’s broader safety is at risk.
As of Friday, Ruiz-Perez was held under a $50,000 secured bond and is slated to make his first appearance in Chatham County District Court on the attempted murder charges on Feb. 17.
