A Pittsboro man faces charges in connection to the shooting of a teenager at an intersection, according to the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office.

A release from the office on Sunday said deputies charged 21-year-old Brian Julius Blackwell related to the non-fatal shooting of a 17-year-old on Wednesday morning. Investigators identified Blackwell on Friday April 28, and located him at Seaforth High School in Pittsboro as he tried to pick up a student from the campus. The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office said upon searching Blackwell’s vehicle, authorities saw drugs and placed him under arrest. Sunday’s release specified that Blackwell is not a student himself at Seaforth.

A 17-year-old driver was taken to the hospital on the morning of Wednesday, April 26 after they pulled up to the intersection of Moore Mountain Road and Hamlets Chapel Road. At the time, the sheriff’s office said it was seeking a Black male suspect in their “late 20s or early 30s” who stepped out of their car and fired into the victim’s vehicle before driving away.

The sheriff’s office did not say Sunday whether Blackwell and the victim are known to each other. Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident, according to the release.

In addition to the assault charge, Blackwell faces several charges related to the drugs he possessed while at Seaforth High on Friday. The sheriff’s office said they include: maintaining/selling/delivering/possessing a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a school, possession of cocaine, maintaining a vehicle/dwelling place for controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Blackwell’s bond is set at $125,000. His first appearance in Chatham County District Court on the charges is set for Monday, May 15.
