A New York man faces a charge of first degree murder in Chatham County after a shooting investigation initially reported as “accidental” was ruled a homicide.

The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office shared a release on Tuesday saying Oliver Arz, a 47-year-old New York resident, has been arrested and transported to Chatham County in connection to the death of 38-year-old Patricia Stanley in February.

Around midnight on February 13, Chatham County Sheriff’s Office deputies and investigators responded to a report of a shooting off Jessie Bridges Road, which is north of Siler City. Upon arrival, deputies found the victim in a recreational vehicle and dead from a single gunshot wound. At the time, authorities said a male subject on scene “remained cooperative with deputies,” but investigators later determined “available evidence did not support the initial narrative of an ‘accidental’ shooting.”

Tuesday’s release said further investigation and the discovery of additional “inconsistencies and details” led the sheriff’s office to treat Stanley’s death as a homicide. Investigators say despite no motive having been released, there is evidence Arz was a known acquaintance to Stanley and his actions are not believed to be random.

Arz’s return to Chatham County follows his detainment by United States Marshal on February 18, with a Chatham County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson confirming Arz was captured in Annapolis, Maryland. He was transported to the Chatham County Detention Center on March 11 and is being held under no bond.

Arz is set to appear in court on Monday, March 21 for his felony first degree murder charge.
