UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill earned a spot on Newsweek’s “World’s Best Hospitals 2024” list last week. It’s one of three UNC Health institutions to be named to the list, along with UNC Health Rex in Raleigh and UNC Health Johnston in Smithfield.
Fourteen total hospitals in the state of North Carolina are included on the list, and UNC Hospitals ranked third among that group. In a ranking of all hospitals in the United States, UNC Hospitals ranked No. 79. UNC Health Rex in Raleigh is the second highest rated hospital in the state, while UNC Health Johnston is rated 12th.
The 2024 list represents an increase in national ranking for UNC Hospitals main campus in Chapel Hill, as Newsweek rated it No. 89 in 2023. It comes as the campus is preparing to bring a new facility online: the North Carolina Surgical Hospital is expected to begin serving patients in May after being under construction for several years.
In total, the Newsweek list includes data from 2,400 hospitals in 30 different countries. Each hospital’s score is based on an online survey of more than 85,000 medical experts and public data from patient surveys. The score also considers metrics such as hygiene and patient/doctor ratio.
