Three UNC Health hospitals saw their names listed in Newsweek’s “World’s Best Hospitals 2023” rankings, with two cracking the top 100 in the United States.

The main branch of UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill (No. 89 in the U.S.), UNC Health Rex in Raleigh (No. 79 in the U.S.) and UNC Health Johnston in Smithfield (No. 358 in the U.S.) were all included on the list of more than 2,300 hospitals in 28 countries.

Newsweek said it surveyed more than 80,000 medical experts when compiling the rankings. Hospitals were evaluated based on four sources: peer recommendations, patient experience, hospital quality (such as safety, hygiene and waiting times) and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). UNC Health defines PROMs as “standardized, validated questionnaires completed by patients to measure their perception of their functional well-being and quality of life.”

“The goal of the rankings is to provide data-based comparison of hospital reputation and performance that is useful to patients and families,” a statement from UNC Health read, “as well as to hospitals as they benchmark themselves against their peers.”
