A pair of hospitals in the UNC Health system and the Triangle earned top honors once again by the publication Newsweek.
In its America’s Best Maternity Hospitals ranking for 2025, the outlet named UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill and UNC Health Rex in Raleigh to its top tier of hospitals for maternity care and treatment — which the UNC Health system shared Wednesday. The latest list marks the third consecutive year each location has earned the top possible ranking, which is five ribbons. The list was created based on a nationwide online survey of hospital managers and medical professionals with experience in perinatal care and obstetrics, as well as public data from surveys about hospital patients’ experiences.
The pair are among 17 hospitals in North Carolina to make the list, with Duke University Hospital in Durham and WakeMed’s Cary and Raleigh hospital campuses also earning the highest rating.
The distinction for the Chapel Hill hospital campus and UNC Rex comes after both were named to Newsweek’s World’s Best Hospital list published in February. UNC Rex placed 68th in the Top 100 hospitals in the country, while UNC Hospitals placed 74th. Both ranked second and third in the state behind Duke University Hospital.
Additionally, Newsweek awarded high rankings for UNC Hospitals in its World’s Best Specialized Hospitals compilation for 2025 — placing in the top 100 for cardiology, endocrinology, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedics and pediatrics care.
This is the fourth year Newsweek partnered with the data and business intelligence company Statista to organize and share the America’s Best Maternity Hospitals list, ranking 404 hospitals across the country. The full list can be found here.
