UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill earned a top spot in the latest rankings from the U.S. News & World Report on Tuesday.

The national publication’s 2022 Hospital Rankings listed UNC Hospitals as the second-best hospital in North Carolina based on its marks in several adult specialties. UNC Rex in Raleigh, which is also part of the broader UNC Health system, is ranked as the third-best hospital and tied with several others.

A release from UNC Health said the Chapel Hill campus earned top 50 national rankings in four categories for adult specialties: Ear, Nose & Throat, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Rehabilitation and Urology. UNC Hospitals also earned “high performing” rankings for four other specialties: Cancer, Gastroenterology & GI Surgery, Geriatrics and Orthopedics.

U.S. News & World Report also rated hospitals by their performance with “Common Adult Procedures and Conditions.” UNC Rex earned ‘high performing’ marks across 19 conditions and procedures, while UNC Hospitals earned that same benchmark across 13.

Another element of UNC Hospitals earned national recognition in June. UNC Children’s hospital made U.S. News’ 2022 “Best Children’s Hospitals” list, with high rankings across eight pediatric specialties — marking the 14th consecutive year UNC Children’s made the list.

The top hospital in North Carolina, according to the report, is not far from the two UNC Health facilities. Duke University Hospital in Durham earned the highest ranking based on 11 nationally-ranked specialties and ‘high performing’ marks for two additional specialties and 19 procedures.

U.S. News & World Report creates hospital rankings each year by “evaluating data” of thousands of facilities to share for patients and consumers to consider. The publication says to be nationally ranked in a specialty, hospitals “must excel in caring for the sickest, most medically complex patients.”
