The latest U.S. News & World Report rankings of hospitals once again see UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill grabbing a top spot.
The 2024-25 rankings by the magazine were released on Tuesday, with the hospital campus checking in at No. 2 overall out of 135 hospitals evaluated in North Carolina. It is a position UNC Hospitals, which is part of the UNC Health system, has held for several consecutive years.
The high rating is due to several standout specialties and treatment categories, according to the U.S. News & World Report. UNC Hospitals’ Ear, Nose & Throat adult specialty earned a national ranking (No. 44), which is a designation given to only the top 50 hospitals in that discipline. Nine of UNC’s pediatric specialties also earned national rankings, the highest being Pediatric Pulmonology and Lung Surgery at No. 15 in the country.
Additionally, the Chapel Hill medical campus earned “high performing” marks for five adult specialties: Cancer, Gastroenterology and GI Surgery, Geriatrics, Pulmonology and Lung Surgery, and Urology. Eleven common procedures and conditions for adults also earned the “high performing designation” in the new list, including Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair, Heart Attacks, Diabetes, and several cancer surgeries.
The recognition comes after UNC Hospitals also placed highly on Newsweek’s “World’s Best Hospitals 2024” in March, where it ranked No. 79 overall and the third best in the state.
Another Triangle-area UNC Health facility cracked the top 5 hospitals in the state, according to the updated rankings: UNC Health Rex in Raleigh, which earned the No. 4 spot. UNC Rex saw its Orthopedics and Gastroenterology and GI Surgery adult specialties earn “high performing” ratings, as well as 15 of its common adult procedures and conditions fields.
The top ranked hospital in the state continues to be Duke University Hospital, which landed 11 nationally ranked specialties and 10 nationally ranked pediatric specialties. The 2024-25 rankings mark 13 consecutive years the Durham facility has earned the No. 1 spot in North Carolina by U.S. News & World Report.
The U.S. News & World Report says its annually-updated Best Hospitals list is meant to help people find top-quality care when they are in need. The rankings are compiled by a team of journalists who analyze data from hospitals visits and admissions to identify which facilities are best for which procedures and specialties. The full 2024-25 list of North Carolina hospitals, as well as the national specialty and procedure rankings, can be found on the magazine’s website.
