Two UNC Health Hospitals have been ranked among the best in the nation for their maternity services.
UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill and UNC Rex Healthcare in Raleigh have both been rated “high performing” for maternity services by the U.S. News & World Report.
U.S. News & World Report published its inaugural edition of the Best Hospitals for Maternity, which expands the U.S. News Best Hospitals rankings, Tuesday. In order to be recognized, a hospital had to submit data from 2019 and its performance had to meet U.S. News’ maternity care standard.
The Best Hospitals for Maternity evaluation looked at hospital data relating only to uncomplicated pregnancies – not high-risk pregnancies. Five different factors were evaluated: scheduled early deliveries, C-section rates in low-risk women, newborn complications, rate of exclusive breast milk feeding, and option for vaginal births after cesarean.
“Hospitals that performed well had fewer newborn complications, fewer early deliveries and fewer C-sections compared to other hospitals across the nation,” said Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of health analysis at U.S. News & World Report. “Out of 2,700 hospitals nationwide that offer maternity services, we identified 237 that earned recognition among the Best Hospitals for Maternity.”
Participating hospital profiles also had to include a variety of relevant information on services and amenities, such as private rooms, valet parking and availability of child birthing classes.
Earlier this year, U.S. News said its goal in launching Best Hospitals for Maternity was to help expectant mothers and families make informed choices about hospitals where they might have a baby.
“Different women have different preferences and needs in childbirth,” said U.S. News, “so it’s important they make their decisions in consultation with a trusted medical professional.”
