No. 9 Notre Dame closed Saturday’s game against No. 5 UNC with seven unanswered goals, turning a 6-5 deficit into a 12-6 win for the Fighting Irish at Dorrance Field.
The Tar Heels started hot on the day, leading 4-0 after the first quarter and 4-1 at halftime. The Irish came on strong in the third quarter to tie the game at 5-5 with 3:52 remaining, but Ryan Levy temporarily stemmed the tide with a UNC goal at the 2:34 mark to give Carolina what turned out to be its last lead at 6-5. Notre Dame then seized the momentum back with two goals in the final minute of the quarter and two in the first 2:44 of the fourth, taking a 9-6 lead and clamping down on the UNC offense from there.
Carolina managed just two shots on goal in the fourth quarter, while Notre Dame had seven. The Fighting Irish finished the second half with 23 total shots to UNC’s 14. The high-scoring Tar Heel duo of Dominic Pietramala and Owen Duffy was held to just one goal and one assist combined. Duffy was held scoreless for the first time since the second game of the season in February.
The loss drops UNC to 9-3 overall and 2-1 in ACC play. The Tar Heels will wrap up the regular season next Saturday when they visit No. 7 Syracuse.
