UNC men’s basketball legend and former radio commentator Eric Montross is among six inductees into the North Carolina Media and Journalism Hall of Fame. Montross won the 1993 NCAA title with UNC before working radio broadcasts on the Tar Heel Sports Network for more than 18 years. He passed away in December after a battle with cancer.
“We are honored to welcome Eric Montross posthumously to the NC Media and Journalism Hall of Fame,” the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media said on Monday morning.
Montross worked with both Woody Durham and Jones Angell on the radio and was on the call for UNC’s NCAA title wins in 2009 and 2017. Beyond the microphone, Montross was also known for his philanthropy. His Father’s Day Basketball Camp raises funds for UNC Children’s Hospital, which Montross began visiting as a college student. Montross also served as the Senior Major Gifts Director for the Ram’s Club.
“He is as generous as they come,” Angell said after the news of Montross’ cancer diagnosis earlier in 2023. “He always has time for people, and he always is thinking of someone else first.”
Other inductees into the Hall of Fame include former Associated Press journalist Skip Foreman, Pulitzer Prize-winning editor Melanie Sill and National Geographic photographer Ami Vitale. For a full list of honorees, click here.
